Happy Thanksgiving fam!

This day has never been about the nonsense story of “Indians and pilgrims” in my family. It’s always been about what you’re grateful for. A day of rest and pleasure. Of eating family favorites and devouring meals that have been made with love, not obligation. A day or reflection.

On this Thanksgiving 2024 I’m grateful for the patients who continue to trust me to care for them during some of the most vulnerable seasons of their lives. I’m grateful for my little practice that allows me the freedom to have the flexibility to be the mom I want to be. I’m grateful for my husband who has supported me in ways I couldn’t have even imagined this year. And I am most certainly grateful for the little girl birthed 10 months ago who is becoming the most amazing little human.

What are you grateful for this year?

It’s that time of year again! An FSA (not to be confused with HSA) has a set timeframe that funds can be used. “Use it or lose it” if you will. Don’t let your hard earned money go to waste! If you have money left on your benefits card you can prepay for care or use it on any nutritional supplements or durable medical equipment in the office (such as SI belts). If you need things we don’t have in stock, let us know and we can order it for you!

A common question we get is “What’s the best age to bring my baby in?” Or “How long to I have to wait to get them adjusted?” A fair question. And the exciting answer is, as soon as they’re out of the womb. Our daughter had her first adjustment within hours of being born. This is me, freshly postpartum, checking my sweet baby for subluxation. Chiropractic helps babies adapt to the stresses of life better, and to grow and meet milestones appropriately. Better sleep. Better regulation. Better digestion. Better immune function. Better mobility. Better eating/latching. What’s there not to love?

Happy Veteran’s Day! Did you know Dr. Fallon’s parents are both U.S. Army veterans? They popped into the office today for a bit to get adjusted! We’ve got immense love for our service folks over here. The world is complicated and imperfect. But one things for sure, without the people who have sacrificed it all we would not live the privileged, generally safe lives that we do in America. And may they continue to fight for freedom, liberty, and justice.

But why?

Because your nervous system is the master system of the body. Nervous system regulation is a popular topic these days and it’s about time! Holistic chiropractors have been talking about nervous system regulation for over a century. And it’s about time the rest of the healthcare system caught up.

Short version. Misalignments, or subluxation, in the spine inhibit the neural impulse. There are signals that constantly run to and from the brain via our nerves, and subluxation inhibits the efficiency and quality of that transmission. Poor nerve function leads to disorder. Disordered nerve function can lead to developmental issues, illness, and delays in milestones.

Proper nerve function can lead to happier babies, healthier systems, improved immune function, better range of motion, better autonomic function, and optimal development. The true “how” it works is a little complicated. But we can dive into that if you want the details. But the cliff notes version is that when the brain communicates with the body efficiently everything works a lot better!

You won’t see any of these spooky scenarios around here at Lumos! Also…to get a lil serious a lot of these are examples of medical gaslighting. Our best advice is to get information from valid sources, to ask questions, and don’t let your providers’ or your own biases get in the way. It’s hard navigating the healthcare system out here. And unfortunately there’s no easy way to know who is giving you good info. But we will try to answer any questions you have fairly and without judgement! 💜

Birth centers ✨
The final installment of our three part series! Birth centers have the reputation of being a middle of the road, best of both roads option. However, most birth centers don’t provide any additional health or intervention options that can’t be offered at home.

Birth centers are a great choice for people who don’t have a home that would function well for birth. Sharing walls with neighbors, having a multifamily household, or being too far from the nearest hospital for a safe transfer are common reasons people would prefer a birth center. You get the clutter free, pristinely clean, instagramable birthing experience. You typically don’t have to worry about supplies and you definitely don’t have to worry about how to protect your furniture from the messiness of labor. From my experience, most parents who choose a birth center feel a since of calm because it still emulates the version of birth most of us grew up knowing. You go into labor, you pack your bags, and you go the a facility. And if that is what makes you feel safest, then it’s important to nurture and honor that preference.

We have a few birth centers in town that come highly recommended! One really cool and unique one is Given Women’s Health Oasis @holistichealthtulsa It’s tucked away out north and is a little forest wonderland. Check em out!

We love a well adjusted baby around these parts! What’s the benefit? Why would you bring your perfect newborn to a chiro? Short answer: To make sure they have optimal nervous system development.

Movement plays a critical role in brain development and meeting milestones. How we move and how our spine moves matters in a big way. Think of it like a math class. When babies are born they have a slew of reflexes that help them get the basic down. Think of this like your basic addition and subtraction. We eventually integrate these reflexes though our nervous system and we develop and hit more milestones — eating solids, rolling over, crawling, walking, talking, laughing, engaging, self soothing, and so on. This is like learning multiplication and division. A little more complex but pretty easy as long as you mastered the basics. Then there’s our fully developed adult bodies that have so many complex processes. This is more like calculus. If you struggle with basic addition and subtraction, you’ll like struggle with multiplication. But there’s no WAY you’ll nail calculus. Our bodies are the same. Milestones are extremely important building blocks. And when our babies don’t master the basics they don’t “grow out” of the problems. They develop into bigger problems with a different label.

So why get your baby adjusted? To make sure they can live life optimally. To make sure they’re hitting their milestones. To make sure you catch any deficits early, and can correct them before they become a problem.

Where to have your baby Part 2 of 3

Hands down, the most common option in our country is a hospital birth. Being in a spot where all of the resources are seems like the obvious safest option, but that’s not necessarily the case. There are pros and cons to birthing in a hospital, just like there are for birthing outside of the hospital. When you have a hammer…everything looks like a nail. When providers have easy access to interventions they’re more likely to jump and use them prematurely, leading to a scenario we call the cascade of interventions that often ends in C Section or another emergency. But a good hospital provider can still support a physiological birth! At the end of the day it’s about being truly INFORMED and birthing where you feel safest.

My two cents? The value of a doula during a hospital birth is IMMENSE.

One of the most common objections I hear to chiropractic care is “why is such a short visit so expensive!?” and while I understand the question at its surface it’s also mind boggling.

Chiropractic adjustments feel good, but that’s not the goal. It is not a massage or meditation or pedicure. The goal is not for you to have a long and relaxing experience. The goal is to adjust the spine for optimal neurological performance. To get you feeling better quickly. You wouldn’t get mad at your mechanic for being so experienced that they could finish your car quickly. You wouldn’t get frustrated with your house cleaner for finishing quickly. A quick chiropractic appointment is typically the result of an efficient and educated provider.

You’re not just paying for the adjustment. You’re paying for thousands of hours of education and access to someone who can help you without wasting hours of your time. You’re paying for someone who can think critically and isn’t just a social media influencer. So many people have heard the phrase “Webster Technique” but don’t know what it entails. Let us help you out there!

Webster is a pelvic balancing technique, most commonly utilized during pregnancy. But, Dr. Fallon actually does Webster on many patients who aren’t pregnant who have SI joint dysfunction!

Webster addresses the biomechanics of the pelvis by adjusting the sacrum, and releasing soft tissues that contribute to pelvic misalignment.

Webster is well known for “turning babies” but this is N O T the function of Webster. The goal is not to turn babies. The goal is to have a balanced pelvis that can function optimally. And often times when the pelvis is balanced, baby can position themselves into optimal position for engaging for a safe and smooth labor.

So yeah, we’ll see you regardless of your goals. Decrease pain? On it. Improve function? We got you. Flip that baby? We can balance that pelvis, and give your baby the best chance they’ve got!

Let’s talk about tongue ties 👅

There is a lot of confusion and misunderstanding in the world of tongue tie releases, even amongst major healthcare providers. Tongue ties seem to be a hot topic, but it’s not that they’re new or a fad, it’s that we recently have started to realize to long term impact they can have on infants.

Here’s a few things to know about tongue ties and tongue tie releases.

💜 Most pediatricians are not great at assessing for ties or helping with feeding issues. And that’s ok! It’s literally not their jobs. They are experts in illness and disease, not oral motor function. If you think your child has a tie and your pediatrician says they don’t, I would highly recommend getting a second opinion from a tongue tie expert.

💜 A tongue tie release is a surgery. A minor surgery, but still a surgery nonetheless. Just like a shoulder, back, or knee surgery it is important to strengthen, release, and train the muscles in the area with the proper rehab for optimal results. You wouldn’t get a shoulder surgery and not do PT. No one should ever offer a tongue tie release without making sure the patient has the proper bodywork and rehab afterward.

💜 The skill set of the provider performing the release makes a MASSIVE difference. Much like in the way that all chiropractors are technically *allowed* to see kids or pregnant people, all dentists can technically perform releases. That doesn’t mean they are skilled at it. An incomplete release can lead to issue down the road or a revision surgery so it’s important to assess how many of the provider’s patients need repeat procedures. We have our favorites for a reason.

💜 tongue ties inhibit proper oral function. That’s not just for breastfed babies. The tongue functioning properly makes sure the palate grows the way it should, and impacts the airway. These are important functions for all infants, not just one with breastfeeding concerns. While breastfeeding concerns are typically the most urgent reasons ties get addressed, they should really be assessed in all kids.

We are located three doors up from the last office at 7161 S Braden Ave! We moved into Dr. Fallon’s office wellness collecting @ourplacetulsa

The vision of Our Place was to put a few different providers under one roof who are likeminded and inclusive. So far we’ve got @lumoschiropractic @sanamora_wellness and @photo_doula. It’s getting a little full over here with badass female energy but we might add a couple providers if they’re the right fit!

So the vibe will be a little different. But the same feeling of community, openness, and inclusivity that you’ve associated with Lumos for nearly a decade will still be at large! 💜

On this second day of World Breastfeeding Week I figured I would share some of my breastfeeding story with y’all.

My pregnancy was dreamy. Labor and delivery honestly could not have gone better. Then postpartum hit and all hell broke loose. I had a lot going on physically, and breastfeeding woes was at the top of the list. At two days old my mama gut told me something was off. She was latching, but she was screaming constantly. And not crying. SCREECHING. Any parents out there know what I’m talking about.

We called Montika at @holistichealthtulsa in tears. She calmed me down and sent Rachelle (one of their IBCLCs) to our house the next day. A quick weighted feed showed us she wasn’t transferring any milk. Then it started. Pumping around the clock to try and get my supply up. SNS so I could latch her so she wouldn’t get too used to bottles. Bottles. Donor milk. Washing pump parts. Obsessing over nutrition and supplements. Tongue tie release. Bodywork. It was chaos. It was stressful. And I had this primitive fear that she was going to starve because my supply never got close to being able to sustain her. But the few moments of “success” were so beautiful and worth it. We only made it about 5 months. But there’s NO WAY we could have made it even that far with our IBCLCs.

I share my story not so people will feel bad for me, but in solidarity with other parents who weren’t able to nurse they way they dreamed. For those whose journey wasn’t the blissed out beautiful experience they had hoped. You still matter. Your experience is so valid. And you freaking did it! 😘

It’s been a long wait, but the doc is physically and mentally well enough to return to practice. We’re working out some details on the official date, but it’s only weeks away. We promise 😘

Happy International Day of the Midwife!
Tulsa is so fortunate to have so many amazing midwives. I’ve been blessed to attend births at most of the birth centers in town. I’ve attended home births. And I’ve gotten to work alongside these amazing birth workers. But this is the first year I’ve been on the side receiving care from a midwife. Kennedy @littlehollowmidwifery will always hold a special place in our hearts.

What makes midwives so special? I don’t even know how to put it into words. But the trust, the care, the love, the autonomy, it is unmatched. No matter how many hospitals attempt to take on a “midwifery model of care” it will never be the same. Here’s to the midwives supporting parents birthing their babies in the rawest ways possible. Letting parents take the lead, and just supporting them when they need it. We love you. We’re grateful for you. And the world needs more of you. It’s not easy work, but it’s damn important.

C-section awareness month 💜

There are a lot of different reasons a pregnant person’s journey might end in a cesarean. Sometimes they could have been avoided, other times not so much. Sometimes they are planned, other times it’s a curveball. And in every scenario that parent deserves support after undergoing a difficult procedure to get their baby earthside safely.

Cesareans are the only major surgery that we pressure people to “bounce back” from. That’s BANANAS. If anything they deserve more time to heal. More time to process. More time to slow down and ignore the demands of society.

If you’ve had all cesareans, VBAC, or any other combination, you did what you had to do. Your labor and delivery was just as important and life changing as someone who has a vaginal delivery. You birthed a whole ass human! And that’s worth celebrating.

✨ Black Maternal Health Week ✨
What makes it so much more dangerous for Black folks to birth their babies in America than other races? Medical and institutional racism. We aren’t listened to, we’re ignored, and there are a lot of strange beliefs that are still held that simply aren’t true (like the one that black folks have a higher pain tolerance…what!?)

A lot of folks have combated this by building an all black birth team. No one will understand what it’s like to be Black like another Black person can. But systemic racism can cause even Black providers to slip up and fall into the same practices as some of their non-black counterparts. This is why it’s important to really do your research. In the same way that not all midwives are automatically safer than an OB, not all Black providers are automatically safer to birth with. And quite frankly, an all Black birth team isn’t even possible to put together in some places. So then what? You find your people, even if you don’t match physically.

I wanted to build a birth team that would respect me as a Black woman, but who also had similar values as me, and fully respected my autonomy. I landed on a midwife who happened to be queer and a doula who happened to be Native American. No one on my team looked like me, but they respected me, listened to my wishes, and never dismissed my concerns. Don’t get too hung up on the race if your providers. You have to dig much deeper than that for safety.

We need more Black birth workers. And there is beauty in being surrounded by people who share the same culture as you, as you bring your baby into this world. But don’t be afraid to let allies support you too. Thanks @littlehollowmidwifery and @photo_doula for doing the work and learning how to appropriately support folks of all different backgrounds. 💜 and for keeping Black birthers safe.

Tomorrow and Thursday are our last days in the office, and then it’s time to hunker down and focus on Baby Mac!

Yadenee will be available and checking the phones once a day throughout the week. We’ll let you know when the doc is back in the office. It all depends on when this little girl decides to show her face!

Took Leti in to see Dr. Hermes at @elevationanimalchiro.ok today! Our furry friends can see the same benefits as we do with regular chiropractic care. And he’s one of the best! Leti loves him so much, and so do we!

Fun fact: Dr. Hermes is a veterinarian who trained to be a chiropractor. So he’s an expert on all things animal, not just spinal manipulation!

The doc is feeling festively large and in charge! We’ve got about four openings this week, and we’re on a wait list for next week. If you’re itching by for an adjustment call before they’re gone!

We’ll be closing for Dr. Fallon’s maternity leave at the first of the year. And we’d love to see your faces before the hiatus! If we don’t get to see you, Merry Christmas! Happy holidays! Happy New Year! And we’ll see you a couple months after Baby Mac has made her appearance!
